Ovulation Induction

The goal of ovulation induction therapy is to achieve healthy ovulation and, depending on the diagnosis, the ovulation of multiple eggs instead of just one each month. Inducing the release of more than one egg during an intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycle can dramatically increase the chance of pregnancy.

How Ovulation Induction Works

Step 1

The first step in superovulation therapy is to administer medications to enhance the development of mature eggs by the ovaries.

Step 2

The development of the eggs in their follicles (fluid-filled sacs) within the ovary is then monitored by transvaginal ultrasound.

Step 3

Once the follicles have reached the appropriate size to contain a mature egg, an injection is given to trigger ovulation.

Step 4

Patients are directed to have sexual intercourse over the next two days to coincide with ovulation. If the treatment plan requires intrauterine insemination (IUI), it is performed during the same two days.

Step 5

A simple blood test performed 5-7 days later confirms whether your hormone levels are optimal. If necessary, your fertility specialist will prescribe hormonal supplementation.

Who is a good candidate for ovulation induction therapy?

Ovulation induction (also called superovulation) used in conjunction with intrauterine insemination (IUI) can treat many causes of female infertility including:

  • Cervical factor infertility (related to prior surgery)
  • Unexplained infertility (where the exact cause of infertility cannot be identified)
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a common female endocrine disorder
  • Ovarian dysfunction (inability to ovulate normally on your own)
  • Infertility associated with endometriosis (a painful inflammatory condition of the female pelvis)
