Finding an OB/GYN or midwife who makes you feel respected and supported can have a significant impact on your pregnancy journey. Look for providers who have experience caring for LGBTQ+ individuals and families, use inclusive language on their website and intake forms, and welcome conversations about your unique path to parenthood.
Recommendations from your fertility clinic, local LGBTQ+ organizations, or other LGBTQ+ parents can also be a great place to start. The Human Rights Campaign also maintains a searchable database to help connect LGBTQ+ patients with affirming providers, called the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI).
Fun fact: Illume Fertility has been an HEI Leader for nearly a decade.
At your first appointment, don't hesitate to ask questions about your provider's experience with donor conception, reciprocal IVF, surrogacy, or caring for transgender and nonbinary patients, if applicable.
A truly affirming provider should respect your family's identities, use your preferred names and pronouns, include both parents in care whenever possible, and create a welcoming environment where you feel comfortable asking questions throughout your pregnancy.
