A single IVF cycle typically takes about two months from start to finish, but studies show that many patients need more than one cycle. Your physician will give you a personalized timeline and explain what to expect so you feel prepared.

The short answer: an active IVF treatment cycle typically takes about one month.

When you include important preparation steps such as preconception health optimization, fertility testing, treatment planning, and cycle scheduling, the full IVF process often spans 3 to 4 months from your initial workup to pregnancy testing.

Your exact IVF timeline can vary based on your diagnosis, treatment plan, and whether additional steps like preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) or embryo freezing are recommended.

How IVF works: most patients begin by taking oral contraceptives for about 10 to 14 days to help regulate the cycle before starting fertility medications. Injectable fertility medications are then taken for approximately 9 to 11 days to stimulate the ovaries.

Egg retrieval is a brief outpatient procedure, typically lasting 15 to 30 minutes, during which eggs are collected from the ovarian follicles and sent to the IVF lab for fertilization.

Illume Fertility’s award-winning embryology team closely monitors embryo development in our on-site lab in Norwalk, CT.

Around days 5 to 7 of development, once an embryo has reached the blastocyst stage, embryos are either cryopreserved for future use or an embryo is transferred into the uterus during a simple procedure that usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

After the embryo transfer, there is a 9 to 10 day waiting period to determine whether implantation has occurred, depending on the stage and maturity of the embryo at the time of transfer.

During the ovarian stimulation phase of your IVF treatment cycle, you will typically come in for at least two monitoring appointments to measure the readiness of your follicles (eggs) and hormone levels via ultrasound and blood work.

Once your follicles are mature, your doctor will instruct you to take your hCG trigger shot and return 24-36 hours later for your egg retrieval.
