The Origins of Pride Month

In June 1969, a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City sparked days of protests led largely by transgender women of color, drag queens, and LGBTQ+ youth. Those nights in Greenwich Village turned into a movement.

The first Pride marches took place the following June in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago, and the tradition has grown every year since.

June was officially recognized as Pride Month in 2000, and the designation has expanded over the years to include the full LGBTQ+ community.

Today, Pride is celebrated in cities and towns across the country, including right here in Connecticut and Westchester County, where Illume Fertility is proud to show up alongside the communities we serve.

our foundation

Built With Love

Illume's founder, Dr. Mark Leondires, grew his own family through egg donation and surrogacy, which informs everything from how our staff is trained to the way each patient is treated from the first phone call through the day they bring their baby home.

When Dr. Leondires went through the process himself, he found very few resources designed for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples building families. That led to the creation of Gay Parents To Be, Illume's dedicated LGBTQ+ resource hub.

Because our commitment to the community is rooted in lived experience, inclusivity is never an afterthought at Illume — it is woven into every interaction, form, resource, and treatment pathway.
