One of the most frustrating parts of starting fertility treatment is not being able to get a simple answer to “How much will this cost?” It’s hard to plan your life, career, or next steps without clarity.
The truth is, fertility care has to be highly personalized in order to be effective. This means your treatment plan is uniquely shaped by your medical history, your goals, and how your body responds.
Because of that, it's hard to provide accurate cost estimates until your physician has reviewed your test results and recommended a plan. The good news? At Illume, you don’t have to navigate this alone.
Your physician will explain the treatment path that best supports your goals, and your Financial Coordinator will provide a personalized cost estimate based on your actual plan and insurance benefits.
As your plan evolves, your Care Team will keep you informed and up to date to ensure you always know what to expect next.

Here is what influences the total amount you'll pay during your fertility journey:
Your recommended approach (i.e. IUI, IVF, surrogacy) the services and steps needed to succeed.
Medication type, dose, and duration will vary based on how your body responds during treatment.
Procedures such as fertilization method, genetic testing, and storage needs can affect total cost.
If your journey involves a surrogate or a donor, there may be additional medical, agency, and legal costs incurred.
The number of visits and follow-ups needed varies based on your unique treatment plan.
Your deductible, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximum, and prior authorization all impact your final cost.
Most insurance plans require fertility medications to be filled through specific specialty pharmacies.
Many diagnostic test results remain valid for up to six months, allowing flexibility to when treatment begins.
While the total cost of your journey will depend on your personal treatment plan and insurance coverage, our treatment cost overviews are a great starting point.
Below, we’ve outlined clear cost expectations for each pathway.

To evaluate your current fertility
Diagnostic testing helps us understand how your reproductive system is currently functioning, uncover any underlying problems (such as blocked fallopian tubes or male factor fertility issues), and determine which treatment path is most likely to help you achieve your fertility or family-building goals.
Note: All Illume Fertility patients undergo comprehensive diagnostic testing before beginning their first treatment cycle.
After carefully reviewing your test results, your Illume Fertility physician will recommend a personalized plan that aligns with your goals and gives you the best chance of success.

A lower intervention treatment option
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) involves placing sperm directly in the uterus around the time of ovulation to facilitate sperm and egg meeting. It is often the starting point for:
IUI cycles can be natural, supported with oral medication, or use injectable medication. Your provider will explain which approach makes the most sense based on your testing results and goals.
If IUI is recommended, your Care Team will walk you through what to expect in terms of timeline, appointments, and next steps.

A more advanced approach
In vitro fertilization (IVF) offers the highest success rates and gives us a closer look at egg development, fertilization, and embryo growth. This path allows for more control and is often recommended when other approaches are less likely to be effective.
A typical "base" IVF cycle includes ovarian stimulation with medication, frequent monitoring appointments, an egg retrieval procedure, fertilization in the embryology Lab, embryo culture, and an embryo transfer in a fresh or later cycle.
After reviewing your test results, your Illume Fertility physician will recommend a personalized plan that aligns with your goals and gives you the best chance of success.

Preserve your future fertility
Egg freezing allows you to preserve your fertility at a younger age, when your eggs are generally healthier and more likely to result in a successful pregnancy. This can be particularly beneficial if you wish to delay childbearing for personal or medical reasons.
An egg freezing cycle typically includes the use of ovarian stimulation medications, monitoring visits, an outpatient egg retrieval procedure, and egg cryopreservation (freezing).
During your initial consultation, your Illume physician will discuss your goals and preferences with you, explain how many eggs are recommended to freeze, and what the process may look like based on your timeline and future family-building plans.
After reviewing your test results, your physician will recommend a personalized plan that aligns with your goals and gives you the best chance of success.

Family building with third-party support
Some individuals and couples grow their families with the help of donor eggs, donor sperm, or a gestational carrier (surrogate). This is a more complex, structured process that involves medical, emotional, and legal considerations.
At Illume Fertility, we assist with egg donor matching (if using an in-house donor), external egg or sperm donor and gestational carrier screening, gestational carrier and intended parent(s) support, treatment planning, genetic counseling, embryo creation through IVF, monitoring, and embryo transfer.
Your team will clearly explain what is handled at Illume and what is handled by trusted outside partners, so you feel confident and informed every step of the way.
After reviewing your test results, your Illume Fertility physician will recommend a personalized plan that aligns with your goals and gives you the best chance of success.

To find an insurance plan with the best coverage for fertility testing and treatment, be sure to look at the fine print:
Don't forget to compare deductibles, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums (not just plan premiums) to understand the full financial picture of each insurance plan.
Open enrollment is the annual window when you can sign up for or change your health insurance for the next plan year.
In most states, including Connecticut and New York, marketplace open enrollment typically runs from November 1 through January 15. If you want coverage starting on January 1, you often need to select a plan by December 15.
Employer plans usually follow a similar schedule.

Insurance coverage varies widely, even within the same insurance company. Some plans cover diagnostic testing only, some cover IUI or IVF but not medications, and some require certain criteria to be met before benefits apply.
Your Illume Financial Coordinator will carefully review your plan details and translate the insurance language in plain terms, so you know what is and isn’t covered before you begin.

Contrary to popular belief, fertility treatment is rarely one-and-done. The number of cycles you'll need to achieve your goals depends on maternal age, fertility diagnosis, and treatment approach.
A few things to note:
Understanding your likelihood of success per cycle can help reduce emotional pressure and improve planning. Your Illume physician will review expected outcomes based on your testing results and provide evidence-based guidance.
While assisted reproductive technology is remarkable, it’s no secret that it can also be expensive. The cost of procedures, testing, and medication can quickly add up and make your goals feel out of reach.
If you're uninsured or your insurance plan doesn’t cover fertility treatment, we encourage you to explore the many grants, financing options, and other financial assistance programs to help you afford the care you need.

As soon as your Illume physician confirms your expected treatment plan, your Financial Coordinator will provide a detailed, personalized cost estimate to ensure you feel confident moving forward.
The final amount you pay depends heavily on your clinical plan, your insurance benefits, and your medication needs, which is why it's difficult to provide exact pricing upfront.
Medications are typically billed by a specialty pharmacy and are separate from other cycle fees. Your prescriptions will be based on your physician’s protocol and may need to be adjusted during monitoring.
If you have an insurance plan with prescription coverage, you may only be responsible for your deductible and copay. Your Illume Financial Coordinator will confirm all plan details before your cycle begins.
Small, strategic choices can make a meaningful difference. Here are some cost-saving ideas that won't compromise your safety or success:
The key is targeting the right levers — not just “cutting costs” but spending where it matters (and saving where it doesn’t). We will help you understand exactly where those decision points are in your plan.
Before you begin treatment, your Financial Coordinator will verify if prior authorization is required and submit any needed clinical documentation. Your insurer makes the coverage decision.
If authorization is pending or denied:
Keep a record of all letters, case numbers, and the names of representatives you speak with. This will help speed up the appeals process and any claim corrections later.
In some cases, yes! Pre-tax dollars can make a noticeable difference when used strategically. Here are some ways you can maximize available benefits:
Keep itemized receipts and Explanation of Benefits statements. They are often required for reimbursement and for tax documentation.
Disclaimer: Always consult a certified tax professional first to ensure you understand all potential restrictions.
